Tonight at church a woman asked me to sign two copies of my book. She was excited that she snagged the last two copies at Hastings. But when I went to autograph the second book it was already autographed by me but it was to someone else. Then I remembered that there were several ladies who I autographed books for and one of them must've grabbed the wrong book after we had our a picture taken. It's highly strange because I signed the books as they were handed to me and people had to buy them first. So the woman who bought the book I autographed went home with a blank book. I wonder if she noticed or called the store? Then the woman at church asked "should I bring it back and exchange it for one that isn't autographed?" I said it wouldn't hurt to try it. Weird, eh?

Tuesday Oct 14th I went to the college I graduated from, SUNY Oswego, and did my first signing. It was last-minute planned so attendance wasn't as great as it could've been, plus we are talking poor college students here, but regardless I had a great time and signed a ton of books and even got a nice pen from the school to sign with and to keep. Then I went to the River's End book store and did a signing and discussion. It was hard deciding what to read out loud but I think it went well and I signed a ton more books and chatted with people who attended. I didn't get pictures of this event. Not sure why I forgot. Must've been nerves as the style was different. The atmosphere as great, though, and supportive. It helped a lot that the book store owner read the book and loved it. Last, my Border's book store event in Syracuse took place on Friday Oct 17th at 6 PM and tons of people showed up. Some people had read about it in the paper and some saw the ads in the store. Some people showed up just because they knew me. I sold 27 copies total, which was pretty good, I thought. They were also very friendly. I had barely a minute to rest between pics and autographs. The best thing of all was most of the people who bought books didn't know me personally and they bought the book because they had heard about it. WHAT? They'd heard of me? I know, surprised me, too. Anyway, thanks for letting me share, not that you had any say in it. LOL!

Marketing Interview with Online Fiction Editor/Author/Blogger

Kathi Macias here, with a real treat for you--an interview with everybody's favorite online fiction magazine editor, edgy Christian fiction blogger, and now official novelist, Michelle Sutton. This lady reads more books every week than most of us have in our entire libraries, so she knows whereof she speaks--so listen up and learn what this "edgy Christian fiction" expert has to say.

Q: Michelle this is your first published book. Tell us about it.

A: It's Not About Me was actually the sequel to three other books that I have since pulled from the series. Two of them are now stand-alone titles. INAM is the fourth book of the prior six-book series but is now the first book in a three-book series. Since the last three books in the series were about young adults and young-adult issues, it made sense to pull them away and make them their own. The story is about two pastor's sons (brothers) and a young woman they both love. Through a series of tragic events, the young woman discovers that love is not what she thought. She also finds true joy and real faith in the midst of it all.

Q: For our readers who may still be anticipating the joy of that first published book, describe a bit about your feelings when you first knew the manuscript had been accepted for publication, and then how you felt when you finally held your "baby" in your hands.

A: When I first found out, I was happy but not super-thrilled because I pretty much knew about the sale for a while before I signed the actual contract. It all started feeling real to me when the mock-up covers were done. I saw them and thought, "Wow, my story is going to be in print!" That's when the enthusiasm really began. Of course, when I held the book the first time, it was like holding a newborn baby. I got the same feeling of wonder that says, "Wow, I can't believe it's really mine!"

Q: Now that the book's been out for a few weeks, tell us about your "on the job" marketing training. Any surprises--good, bad, ugly, or otherwise?

A: I started marketing this book back in December of 2007 (exactly nine months before its release) in preparation for the "birth," if you will. I had plenty lined up in regards to interviews, author appearances, radio interviews, etc. Then planning the book-signing took place about six weeks before the baby was "due"--kind of like planning a baby shower. It was loads of work but lots of fun too. The reward is great, but like childbirth, it's a bit exhausting!

Q: What are the primary methods you are using to market your book, and can you tell yet which seem to be the most successful?

A: Blog tours, book club selection, interviews, social media sites, reviews, spotlights, radio, giveaway promos, etc.--I'm using them all! The most effective so far seems to be via social media sites, believe it or not. Those folks are actually paying for the book. YAY!

Q: What unique advice do you have for first-time authors--and the rest of us as well--who want to get the most return on their marketing investment?

A: I have yet to see the number from the book club selection or the blog tours because they are both scheduled for October so they're only now beginning to be in progress. My advice is to invest in yourself if you want to see this "thing" called being an author work. You have more to gain than you will lose if word gets out about your book and people discover you. You will develop a following, and that is what will keep your career/ministry going--that and God's will, of course!

And for what it's worth, I am having a bad day here. Everyone wants my book and many people are being told they have to wait no matter where they go to get it. Even online. Now as much as I'd love to sell out of my books, this is a real drag to have happen right before some major booksignings and my book being featured on the book club! I have to find out what is going on. Grr....

Meanwhile, tickle my fancy and read my interview. It's different from all of my other interviews. And when you finish please post a comment to let Nora know that you stopped by to read it. :) Muchas gracias, amigos and amigas!

My books are supposed to arrive any day now. I have ordered a zillion of those bubble wrap mailers for sending out my books. My spreadsheet is filling up fast. I have so many blog interviews, spotlights, giveaways and features everywhere that it takes a spreadsheet to keep track of everything. To be a successful author in the fiction world you have to do a lot of promotion, especially on your first book. If you can't afford a personal secretary or publicist, you better start yourself a spreadsheet and keep track of everything for tax purposes. Right now I feel like the guy in the picture pumping iron, only for me it's multi-tasking. But it's worth it just to have people reading my book. What a great feeling!
